I think he did an excellent voice job for jar jar. I think the awfulness of his character was due to the screenwriters and george lucas.

When a movie character fails, it can sometimes be because of poor acting in an otherwise good role, but more often it’s bad writing and directing. I’ve seen some stellar actors lay some real turds on screen because they can only work with what they’re given. Jar-jar was completely on Lucas. It never even occurred to me to blame the actor.

Well, it’s not his fault... he was doing his job! Less could be said about casting agents that would ignore him for his previous performances.... That’s probably what lead to a decline in his mental health.

( I wasn’t trying to be insensitive with my post, though I realize it’s dismissive of the deeper issues that could’ve lead to his deteriorated mental health. )

IIRC one of the reasons the original three films weren’t complete dumpster fires themselves was because actors like Harrison Ford weren’t afraid to tell him “Hey George, this is a pile of shit. Nobody talks like this!”

I think they did the best with what they had and came out looking okay. There was no way Hayden Christiansen was going to come out okay with that role, that direction, and his inexperience.

They did try to tell him that, but there is still lots of clumsy dialog in Episode 1 where the actors had to struggle to get the timing right. I don’t know to what extent they were able to temper him.

IMO the worst part about Episode I is that Lucas claimed it was meant to be a kid’s movie, so of course the entire first half hour is about negotiations with trade federations and Jedi loafing about.

‘cos there’s nothing kids love more than trade negotiations.

But it did satisfy in immediately getting in lots of light saber action that showed how bad-ass the Jedi were. That was the first time we got to see real Jedi in action in their heyday. The movie fell down when people stopped fighting and started talking.

Watch DiCaprio versus the rest of the cast in The Man in the Iron Mask. Sometimes it’s the actor.

But yeah, nobody could have done that well with Jar Jar Binks. Who knows how much worse the character could have been in someone else’s hands?

Yeah, people can dislike an actor’s performances and kids can be inexperienced so I get it. B ut then it crosses over to taking time out to tell a kid (or anyone) via a handwritten/typed letter that he should kill himself, i t’s sickening.
